I love the fluid language of these translations. Perhaps it has something to do with their being recent translations by a group of Russian Language students in St. Petersberg. What makes this group intriguing is not only their name, but that they might be in St. Petersburg, Russian, or perhaps St. Petersburg, Pennsylvania. How mysterious. I imagine them sitting around a table, not only drinking Russian tea and translating tales from Russian into English or English into Russian, but that perhaps, just perhaps, at the end of an evening's session, they read one another's tea leaves as well.
I had a delightful time reading and recording these three stories in front of a large crowd of educators. These stories are perfect examples of how translations work better for reader and listener alike when they sport the modern idiom. You're transported to someplace in the here and now, around the corner or in an adjoining suburb, not 19th Century Russia. These are modern stories for modern times! Greed! Selfishness! Despair! Isolation! Everyday foolishness! Misery. They place Chekhov as another father of modern existential humanism. Great job TTP!
